Melee skills. Runescape 3 melee combat relies on three skills: attack, strength and constitution. All three are free skills. The general recommendation is to keep all three at a similar level.
Equipment upgrades. As soon as you get a piece of equipment that is better than the one you have equipped, switch it. Equipment is very important and it will be of great help wearing the best that you can find.
Low defense targets. New players are advised to pick monsters that have low defense because this allows them to get more XP.
Don’t train in the Wilderness. New players should stay away from the Wilderness as they might be killed by other players. There are plenty of other areas that have monsters and where PvP is not a threat.
Know your weapons. Runescape 3 has a most generous weapon selection. Weapons have corresponding stats and attack types. Before equipping a weapon, study all its stats and understand the type of attack. There are plenty of online resources that offer details about available weapons.
Choose weak targets for training. Runescape 3 monsters are susceptible to different types of attacks and combat styles. There are some who will be easily defeated in melee combat. It’s those you will want to pick for training.
Use house teleport when in trouble. Premium players have an easy way of escaping death or minimizing the death penalty provided they own a house. When in trouble, they can quickly use the house teleport to reach a safe location. Free players can use other types of teleport.
Don’t forget about auto retaliate. It will be much easier fighting monsters when this option is turned on. This is easily done by pressing the sword symbol on the ability bar.
Complete quests. There are some member quests such as Tree Gnome Village or the Waterfall quest that give plenty of combat XP. Last tip, do not give Runescape 3 gold to anyone in game in case of scam.
